In our previous lesson, we quoted one line- The dictionary is an ocean of words. The deeper we dive into it, the deeper the treasure we will find. Well, we’re making diving deep a tad easier for those who value this treasure. In this lesson, we bring to you a collection of some fabulous new vocabulary words incorporated 2020 with the meanings. Of course, you may some words connected with the situation of the pandemic, but some are absolutely different.

Learning new vocabulary words is a great practice because it helps polish our language. When we learn new words, it is best to write them down in a place where you can see them every day. The more we give it a glance, the more our chances of remembering them. And then, you will never know how you start using them in your daily lives.

1. Influencer

If you are savvy with the online world, you would have come across this word several times. It is highly trending and is the “in” thing as well.

Meaning: Someone who affects or changes the way that other people behave.

Example Sentence: Influencers have changed the way social media works now; they sure have the audiences gripped with their skills.

2. Hellacious

The word “hell” gives us a hint that the word has something to do with a bad experience. Let us take a look at its exact definition.

Meaning: An awful experience and is often used to describe traffic, weather, or even a period of time.

Example Sentence: Sorry; there was this hellacious snowfall on the way; hence, the delay in my arrival.

It is quite a new word and something that we would want to use often. Therefore, we had to have it on our list of new vocabulary words 2020.

3. Stan

No, that’s not the name of a person. In fact, the word is an interesting combination of two other words.

Meaning: A crazy stalker fan. (Stalker+Fan= Stan)

Example Sentence: The new musical sensation was surrounded by a thousand of his stans. The security had a tough time managing the concert.

4. Hench

We bet you haven’t heard the before, but also know that you will be able to use it regularly. That is one reason we had to add it to our list of new vocabulary words 2020.

Meaning: Of a person having a powerful, muscular physique; fit, strong.

Example Sentence: There’s nothing funnier than seeing a really hench guy walking a tiny dog.

5. Jerkweed

Sounds like a slang word, doesn’t it?

Meaning: An obnoxious, detestable, or stupid person (esp. a male). Often as a contemptuous form of address.

Example Sentence: My Team Lead is a jerkweed; I don’t want him at my birthday party.

6. Topophilia

Here’s another one on our list of new vocabulary words 2020 that may be a special word to add to your personal thesaurus.

Meaning: Love of, or emotional connection to, a particular place or physical environment

Example Sentence: I visit my grandmother’s old house every year during the summers; it is like topophilia. I have deep memories hidden in that place.

7. WFH

Is there anyone who did not come across this word in 2020? It was so widely used, that it is now an official entrant in the various dictionaries.

Meaning: Work from home.

Example Sentence: According to our WFH guidelines, we have to login by 10.00 AM and be available for calls till 05.00 PM.

8. Shero

We’re surrounded by heroes these days; but who are they? You will love this word from our list of new vocabulary words 2020.

Meaning: A female hero

Example Sentence: The police officer who saved the locality from the gunman even when she wasn’t on duty is a true shero!

9. Kvell

If you are looking for more verbs for your vocabulary, add this one!

Meaning: Meaning to talk admiringly, enthusiastically, or proudly about something

Example Sentence: Forgive me if I’m kvelling, but this boy will make us proud.

10. Fantoosh

Meaning: Fancy, showy, flashy; stylish, sophisticated; fashionable, exotic. Often used disparagingly, implying ostentation or pretentiousness

Example Sentence: Hey! Check out my all-new fantoosh bag that I picked up during my trip to Europe.

11. Enoughness

Enough isn’t a new word, but enoughness is a new way of using the word.

Meaning: The quality or fact of being enough; sufficiency, adequacy

Example Sentence: They sent us so much food that it gave us a feeling of enoughness.

12. Kvetchy

Just saying the word out loud makes us feel sophisticated, isn’t it? But it has nothing to do with sophistication. Let’s find out the meaning of this new vocabulary word released in 2020.

Meaning: Given to or characterized by complaining or criticizing; ill-tempered, irritable.

Example Sentence: My grandfather is a very kvetchy person; please do not crack such jokes in front of him.

13. Social distancing

Meaning: The action of the practice of maintaining a specified physical distance from other people, or of limiting access to and contact between people

Example Sentence: Please follow all social distancing norms when in the departmental store.

14. WIP

WIP is yet another abbreviation word added to the dictionaries this year. The meaning, although, is very simple.

Meaning: Work in progress. (Mainly in financial or business matters)

Example Sentence: My online venture is still a WIP; I will update everyone on social media when it reaches its first milestone.

15. Thirsty

Meaning: Showing a strong desire for attention, approval, or publicity.

Example Sentence: Teenagers these days are very thirsty; they do anything for attention!
