  • 20 Most Commonly Misspelled Words- Correct Spellings

There are many words in the English Language, that somewhere have similar sounds, but aren’t spelled accurately. One knows the words, but a little here and there lead to wrong spellings. Now, if you are a lover of the English language, you might know that misspelled words aren’t acceptable to readers.

Yet, unintentionally, even the best of the English speakers could jumble some alphabets, or confuse them. We want to avoid that at all times. One way you can steer clear of doing the same is by taking a look at this list.

In one way or another, once you take an in-depth look at this lesson, you might be reminded of not using the wrong spelling the next time you make use of this word.

Here is a list of the 20 most commonly misspelled words in the English language.

    1. Misspelled

Now that we are discussing wrong spellings let us begin from the roots. Several times, we spell this word as ‘mispeled’. One assumes that the word doesn’t include another ‘s’ and another ‘l’. Fortunately, you know now and can abstain from doing the same.

    2. Acknowledgment

Yes, this one may seem complicated to many, and to date, we end up adding an extra ‘e’ after the letter ‘g’ (acknowledgement). That, and other forms that jumble the letters ‘d’ and ‘g’ are incorrect.

    3. Mortgage

We can credit the wrong spelling to the pronunciation of this word to some extent. When we say the word ‘mortgage’, we usually do not pronounce the letter ‘t’. Therefore, unknowingly, we write ‘morgage’. Well, not anymore.

    4. Convenient

How many times have you used ‘i’ instead of ‘e’ after the ‘v’? It’s is one of the most common spelling errors, and while we know it is confusing, it doesn’t work well in the professional world out there.

    5. Rythm

While the letters ‘th’ may sound like ‘dh’, it still makes the spelling wrong. But, it does seem like a forgivable error for beginners. After all, to err is human!

    via

    6. Writing

A self-explanatory reason why people spell this word wrong is that they do not know what to do with the ‘e’ at the end of ‘write’. Thus, the word invariably becomes ‘writeing’ or ‘writting’- both wrong.

    7. Dependent

We use the word now and then, and yet use ‘dependant’, ‘dipendant’ and other such incorrect spellings. Make sure, there is no ‘a’ in this word; only the ‘e’s’.

    8. Themselves

‘They themself told me to be here at this time.’- That is incorrect. This is one of yet another common misspelled words in our vocabulary. When you say ‘they’, it is always ‘themselves’.

    9. Comparison

The end pronunciation of this word may confuse many to use ‘sion’. That indeed is an err, for the spelling is not as complicated as we assume sometimes.

    10. Privilege

Thankfully for us, we now have the privilege not to misspell this word; privelege or priviledge are both unacceptable.

    11. Leisure

The words that use the letters ‘e’ and ‘i’ together usually end up confusing people. One such word is Leisure, wherein many jumbles these two letters in question.

    12. Restaurant

Restaurant is yet another word from our vocabulary that has a perplexing spelling owing to its pronunciation. We end up using ‘restraunt’ as opposed to the defined dictionary version.

    13. Successful

Somehow, one could fear using so many double letters in one word, thinking they might be wrong. Successful is one such word; some incorrect spellings we commonly use are sucesful, successfull, or sucessful.

    14. Vacuum

We cannot blame people for misspelling this word; the spelling is a thinker, for no one would anticipate a double ‘u’ here. At least now, we can make sure to remember this one knowing that it is one distinct word.

    15. Parliament

Most of the time, we can blame our wrong spellings on the way we say these words. There is no way around it than just knowing how to spell it right with practice. The word ‘parliament’ is also one amongst these, with people spelling it as ‘parliment’.

    16. Business

How often do people use this word? And yet, we end up spelling it as ‘buisness’ or ‘bisness’. Both are incorrect.

    17. Definitely

There are several versions of this word like ‘definately’, definitly’, and ‘dafinetly’, to name a few. The best way to go around learning this word is to go by its phonic sounds.

    18. Grateful

Even the best of English speakers could get stuck on this word, wondering if it is ‘greatful’, ‘gratefull’, or ‘grateful. Well, option three it is! An easy way to remember this spelling is to know that it is not the same as ‘great’.

    19. Reference

Using ‘a’ instead of ‘e’ is one standard error that we could commit. Yet again, the way we pronounce it may mislead us. One way you could avoid this mistake is by remembering that it doesn’t spell the way it sounds.

    20. Hygiene

‘Hygene’, ‘hygin’, etc. are all commonly used spellings, all of which do not agree with the dictionary.

    Some more spellings to practice

Now that you have got a great insight into avoiding wrong spellings take a look at some more typical words that you could practice to achieve perfection. The more you practice, the more you will get the hang of remembering them.

They are: foreign, exceed, committed, acquaintance, dumbbell, license, professor, twelfth, pronunciation, and necessary.

  • What are Pangrams? Here’s a list of them!

Before you fret thinking about how complicated this topic sounds, let me tell you, this is one of the coolest things you will read today. Several teachers have introduced us to a pangram sentence, but little did we know this is what we call it.

    What is a Pangram?

A sentence that includes all the English alphabets at least once in each sentence is called a Pangram. See, simple, isn’t it? As far as a sentence has the twenty-six letters once, it qualifies as such a sentence.

Such a sentence is also called a holoalphabetic sentence. Forming such sentences is challenging, yet fun. It makes for an amazing game to play for English learners because it explores one’s personal vocabulary and creativity at once.

Remember, the shorter the sentence, the more difficult it is to include all the letters.

Now that you know what pangrams are, wouldn’t it be intriguing to go through a list of them, that could give you a deeper idea of this concept.

    A list of Pangrams

    1. The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog: This is indeed one of the most common of such sentences. Several educators use this sentence to allow students to identify the uniqueness in it.

    2. We promptly judged antique ivory buckles for the next prize: Here’s a sentence that uses not 26, but 50 alphabets. You should know, that there is no rule that you cannot repeat the letters. You can, but it should appear at least once.

    3. Two driven jocks help fax my big quiz:  A sentence containing 30 letters, this pangram is yet another fun one.

    4. A mad boxer shot a quick, gloved jab to the jaw of his dizzy opponent

    5. Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs.

    6. We promptly judged antique ivory buckles for the next prize.

    7. A wizard’s job is to vex chumps quickly in fog.

    8. By Jove, my quick study of lexicography won a prize!

    9. The job requires extra pluck and zeal from every young wage earner.

    10. Pack my red box with five dozen quality jugs.

Pangram sentences are quite fun if you turn it into a party or classroom game. Give your guests/students the task of forming such sentences. To take the level up a notch, you can assign the number of alphabets to use to pass each round. Sounds like something you can do, right?

Why not begin right here? Form a pangram sentence and leave it in the comment section below.

  • Adjective Upgrade For Your Vocabulary

Life is beautiful, and we constantly come across things, people and places we adore. Additionally, we have so many conversations with a plethora of people on a daily basis. But using the same words to compliment and describe what you love makes the conversation or read a tad stagnated. Why not get an ‘adjective upgrade’ for your vocabulary to make the praiseworthy stuff sound unique and grandeur?

If you’re saying yes, then let’s dig deeper into the most common words, and get a better version out of them!

    via

    Beautiful

Goodness us, but I think this is one of the most overused adjectives today. ‘Oh my God! That place is beautiful’ or ‘You look the world’s most beautiful bride’ sound so regular, that it doesn’t hold the same impact anymore. While gorgeous and pretty are usual synonyms, why not switch beautiful with resplendent? Example:

Your resplendent look is to die for!

    Delicious

We have to face it, we are all mostly foodies now, and we do not miss out on a chance to try some unique stuff. When you visit someone’s place and really love a dish, saying delicious or tasty becomes much like an understatement. After all, every effort should get its due praise. Maybe we can switch to words like scrumptious, toothsome or even palatable. These words will come in handy especially if you are into writing or are a student. Example:

Martha makes the most scrumptious/toothsome cookies in the world.

    Moody

One emotion that we just cannot rid off, can we? Either we are moody, or someone else around us is. While we cannot do anything about the mood, maybe we can make our vocabulary slightly more interesting. Consider replacing it with fretful, temperamental, glum, morose, and sulky (informal). Example:

Her temperamental/fretful/morose/glum/sulky nature has cost me yet another grand project.

    Scared

You’ve just watched a horror movie, or have had a frightful experience which doesn’t qualify for the word ‘scary’. It was much more than that, and you need to look up the thesaurus to sound better. Not anymore, because you just need to add to words like paralyzed, petrified, and timorous to your personal dictionary. Example:

The movie was the most timorous one this director has ever made. It left me paralyzed in several scenes for I couldn’t move. I am too petrified to sleep tonight.

    Strange

News, episodes, people, and sometimes even food, we find the strangest versions of these nowadays. So much that the word ‘strange’ surely needs a vocabulary upgrade! Dump the word for enhanced versions like outlandish, queer, and peculiar. Example:

I saw a collection of the most outlandish clothes in this new boutique near my home. The mismatched colors looked queer; I’m telling you, they have the most peculiar attires!

    Use

We have used ‘use’ so many times so far, that even this sentence seems like a bore. If you agree, then you can try newer words like exhaust, expend, consume, employ and utilize. Here’s how:

I’ve exhausted all the money I had on groceries. I had no clue that I would be expending so much on it.

    Old

The word ‘old’ does sound quite old, and we definitely need a better synonym list for this one. Primitive, feeble, ancient, outmoded, archaic, and conventional need some space in your vocabulary. Example:

The archaic methods of working in this company will not work anymore. The HR terms are outmoded, and we need to step out of our conventional zone.

Might I add here, that this example is not a suggestion to use them all up at once. It’s just to show how well it fits!

    Interesting

Strange is not the only thing that happens around us, there’s so much interesting taking place too. Then doesn’t the word itself require an ‘interesting’ transformation as well? You can utilize other positive adjectives like engrossing, gripping, enthralling, bewitching, enchanting, and even titillating(you might want to check before using this word to know if you are using it appropriately). Example:

I had the most enthralling conversation with George here. He is quite an enchanting man!

    Have

Did you ever imagine that the word ‘have’ can have more than one synonym? Well, it does. Switch it with acquire, possess, beget, own or contain. Example:

I own the grandest collection of earnings. My possessions are not for borrowing.

    Brave

There are so many brave people and brave stories that we hear about almost every day, that using this word is just not enough. How about dauntless, gallant, valiant, intrepid, and heroic? Example:

Helen is very intrepid indeed; she managed the medical emergency situation dauntlessly.

Go for this amazing adjective upgrade and come across as someone with an enhanced vocabulary. If you are looking for more ways to improve your word bank, then you should check out this article.

  • Are you using ‘which’ and ‘that’ correctly?

‘Which’ and ‘that’ seem like the most common words from our personal dictionary, and we use it an umpteen number of times in a day. But did you know, so many of us aren’t using them in an intended manner? Read on to answer the question, ‘Are you using ‘which’ and ‘that’ correctly?

It is significant that you understand the meaning of Defining Clause and non-defining clause before we move ahead. You cannot use these words in question until you know more about these clauses.

    Defining Clause

Much like the name suggests, this clause takes the burden on the entire sentence. It adds more meaning to a sentence, and the information it carries is essential. You can also call this an Essential Clause or Restrictive Clause. Now if you want to use the word ‘that’, then it needs to be in a defining clause. Let’s break this down:

    Example:

My tooth that has a cavity is keeping me in a lot of pain.

The above sentence establishes two things:

    1. It shows that the speaker is talking about one particular tooth, which goes to say that he/she has more than one tooth (which is obvious). In this scenario, the speaker is referring only to the tooth that has a cavity, and not the others.
    2. If you remove the clause ‘that has a cavity’, which is the defining clause, it would be a simple sentence. This part defined the sentence and added more meaning to it.

    Non-defining Clause

You can relate to a non-defining clause with ease if you think of it as something that can be thrashed. Think of it as the cache on your mobile or your software. It is unwanted, and your device should do without it. This is why they are also called nonessential clauses or nonrestrictive clauses. In this situation, you can use the word ‘which’. Let’s dig deeper into this:

    Example:

My car, which has a dent, is at the mechanic’s place.

What does the above example tell you?

    1. The phrase ‘which has a dent’ is adding a description to the car. Go back to the definition, this is like cache. The meaning of this sentence wouldn’t change even if you remove it.
    2. The sentence doesn’t imply that the person could have more than one car. Of course, it adds more flavor to the essence of the sentence, but we can do without it.

Doesn’t it all seem much easier now that you know their apt placements and use? Let me leave you with a few more sentences. Read them a couple of times, alter them using the above explanation, and triumph in the use of these relative pronouns,’which’ and ‘that. It might take some time to perfect the use, but once you do, it will be helpful for life!

  • Different Words You Can Use Instead Of ‘Very’

Upgrading your language on a regular basis is something that thousands enjoy, and find helpful. ‘Very’ is one of the most common words, and sometimes, it tends to get overused. If you have to write regularly or speak regularly, then you should look at alternatives for this very easy-going vocabulary. This habit of learning a different word for the most used ones enhances the language and impresses your readers/listeners. Here are some different words you can use instead of ‘very’.

    Immensely

Very and immensely can be used as an alternative of the other. Here’s an example:

This assignment is very difficult for me to complete.

This assignment is immensely difficult for me to complete.

As you can see, using a different word in place of very has lifted the essence and the look of this sentence. This can make you sound more eloquent in this language.

    Extremely

There are a number of contexts, where both these words can substitute one another. Although, the use of extremely does make the sentence a tad stronger than it was. For example:

We are very late; seems like we are going to miss the train.

We are extremely late; seems like we are going to miss the train.

When we use ‘extremely’ in this sentence, it lays a stronger emphasis on the fact that they are late, and so much that they could miss the train. Using ‘very’ over here could make for a weaker sentence.

    Significant

Use the word significant to express something with much more strength, than with ‘very’. For example:

Our new boss, Mark, has made a very big difference in the profits of this company.

Our new boss, Mark, has made a significant difference in the profits of this company.

In the above example, you can see that the use of a different word, ‘significant’ did not just add intensity to the expression, but also eliminated the word ‘big’. This reduces wordiness in a sentence.

    Supremely

‘Supremely’ is a better fit than ‘very’ in cases when you want to praise someone. Check out this example:

Jacob can handle more than one project at a time; he is very hard-working.

Jacob can handle more than one project at a time; he is supremely hard-working.

You can see how this different word has changed the entire meaning of this sentence not in the sense of context, but in the sense of precision. You could say ‘very’ and that becomes very common. A lot of people are hard-working indeed! But when you say ‘supremely’, it means that this person is one notch above the others. This makes your point clearer than before.

    Remarkable

You can ditch ‘very’ and resort to ‘remarkably’ when you want to admire the beauty of something. This is how you can do that:

Kashmir is a very beautiful place in India.

Kashmir is a remarkably beautiful place in India.

Using remarkably place of very adds more weight to how beautiful the place really is.

    Highly

Don’t touch the live wires; it is very dangerous!

Don’t touch the live wires; it is highly dangerous!

You see the difference, don’t you? Using a different word like ‘highly’ in place of ‘very’ in this sentence lays stress on the danger aspect of that action.

These are just some of the substitutes that can take over this common word and make one feel that you are a bundle of vocabulary. If you are at an impactful position in your office, then people might notice that you use the word ‘very’ a lot. But if you use these different words, then they are sure to be impressed. Similarly, you can get a pat on your back from your teacher for doing the same. Add beauty to this generic word, and to your hold in the English language.

  • Quotes That Come In Handy On a Daily Basis
